Knowles on HRD
To Knowles, HRD is not just a synonym for training, in-service education, management development, or manpower development, as we typically think of it in a simplistic sense. If it were, he argued, then traditional learning theories would serve it best.
His understanding of the importance of HRD goes far beyond that.
"It envisions the role of the Human Resource Developer as being perhaps more crucial than any other role in determining which organizations will be alive twenty years from now and which will be extinct."
Developers will need to radiate the confidence of the ultimate professional, because instead of being a good facilitator, or administrator, or consultant, developers will have to know more than the people in each of those positions.
(Knowles, 1978)
